ZP 202 - Vehicle Fortification and Travel

When the zombies attack, there will be mass hysteria. People will begin looting and won’t give a damn if you are a zombie or not. They will see a possible threat and opt to eliminate that threat. Fortifying your house or wherever you are hiding out is a great idea. But what if the zombie attack lasts for months? Or even years? As long as the parasite continues getting a steady source of hosts to infect, the zombies will remain. This means that eventually, you could run out of supplies. How will you safely relocate yourself?

Selecting the Right Vehicle:

Obviously, your options will most likely limit you, but if you have happened to hunker down in a used car lot, you are going to be at an advantage. We were discussing the best vehicle for this situation recently and Mike and I both agree that if you could somehow get your hands on an armoured vehicle (Like the ones banks use to transport money) you would be in a pretty sweet position.

The armoured car is already set up for the zombie attack. It is armour plated which will stop zombies as well as bullets from jealous, not so fortunate people around you. What really makes it effective, though are the gunholes already built in. You could drive right into a zombie pack and just let loose all day.

The only real downside to the armoured car is that they don’t have too much clearance. They are essentially just vans and their may be fallen trees, rubble, etc. from zombie and humn fights. Because of this, you could be better off in a bigger SUV that you have fortified yourself. This option is a bit more effort, but could be more effective depending on your surroundings.

The Importance of Tires:

It’s kind of a given, but could be easily overlooked. You need proper tires or your whole vehicle will be useless. You also need to pick the right tire for the job and have a couple spares. I would recommend another full set of 4 tires just in case.

Again, you will most likely be limited to what you can find, but if you manage to find full rubber tires, take them. These tires are not going to pop on you and that could save your life. Changing a tire means getting out and exposing yourself to threats. With fully rubber tires, you are going to run over pretty much anything without wrecking them. The only thing better that we could suggest is if you find a vehicle with tracks. Tracks won’t pop, go over everything and look bad ass.

Armouring Your Vehicle:

Assuming you haven’t found an armoured car, you will need to find away to toughen up whatever you do have. Keep in mind that zombies are just as strong as a human and almost completely incapable of using tools. Also keep in mind that they do not feel pain. This means make sure your vehicle is tough enough to stop an ordinary human from getting in and that will stop a zombie from getting in. If you are only protecting yourself from the zombies, barring over the windows should be pretty effective. You may want to consider installing some sort of secondary window inside the vehicle, though. Zombies breaking glass means zombie parasite infected blood. Fashion some sort of “sneeze guard” type device and where protective clothing. You may also want to consider plexi-glass of just sealing off all windows with sheet metal. Your call.

Because there may be debris from fights in the streets, you may want to install some protection for the undercarriage of your vehicle. Damaging that could mean being stuck in a car that doesn’t run. They sell such things for offroad enthusiasts. It’s basically just metal plating that hides your drivetrain, etc. If you can get your hands on a Hummer, it is already included. A military Hummer is meant to withstand land mine blasts, so that would porbably be fairly useful.

Properly armouring a vehicle to protect against other people is where the real problems lie. People have and are fully capable of using very complex weapons such as guns and explosives. Because of this, we recommend only travelling when you need to and planning your route ahead of time.

Armouring your vehicle to protect against bullets is tough to do. Even armoured cars can be penetrated by certain types of bullets. We recommend a large piece of metal near the back of your vehicle as you are most likely to be shot at from behind. We also recommend getting your hands on some body armour if possible. Your local spy shop should have some. You can also get it on eBay.

Just remember that the more armoured your car is, the heavier and therefore, slower it will be.

Planning Your Route of Travel:

Planning your route ahead of time could be the most important part of travelling during the uprising. You need to use any itel you have gathered about the areas in between your destination to make your decision. Sometimes the quickest route isn’t always best.

Try to plan your route around major metropolitan areas. These areas are most likely jam-packed with abandonned cars and debris. Not to mention, there is a higher probability of running into zombies here as the virus constantly needs new hosts. Instead try taking rural and back roads. With any luck, you should have clear sailing.

You also want to avoid (If possible) any camps of people. If you already have enough people with you and are functioning well, stick it out together. You can only trust so many people and the more people you bring into your circle, the more likely you are to encounter some form of treachery.

Obviously the above does not count military camps. If you can find a military camp where they are protecting people, go to it. Preferrably in your vehicle as they will know you are not zombies this way. Alternatively, if this is a refuge camp where they have zombies locked up for testing, you are better off outside. These zombies can get out or infect researchers. It only takes one infected to start another new pack of zombies.

It is also important to take note of the level of protection the camp offers. If it is low, you may want to steer clear. Because of the number of people inside, the zombies will flock to it if they find it. You could be better off in your small group.

Supplies:

When travelling, pack like you are going to be on the road for a week longer than anticipated. This is important as you will most likely encounter time consuming obstacles on your way. Make sure you pack plenty of quick and easy to eat food, water, weapons and something to sleep in. It’s important to mention that while on the road, if you need to sleep, you do it in the safety of the vehicle. You also sleep in shifts. You should have a minimum of 1 lookout at all times. If there are 4 of you, 2 sleep while to keep watch and keep each other awake. It’s precautions like these that will save your life.

You also want to pack spare car parts, especially batteries, fan belts, tires, etc.

Awesome advice, I am always leery about traveling in a vehicle period, but I can see it as a necessity at times. The Hummer is a good idea. And here I thought they were nothing but gas guzzling monstrosities.

It’s important to keep in mind that it’s the real Hummers that would be a good idea. The dumbass H2’s and H3’s aren’t nearly as tough.
